Bernedoodle, Bernese Mountain Dog and Poodle Mix

The Bernese mountain dogs have been crossed with the Poodle so that the Bernedoodle breed is obtained. The aim of crossing these breeds was to combine the loyalty of the Bernese with the intelligence of the poodles. The shedding is a comfortable area, as this mix doesn’t shed or sheds very little the most, therefore cannot be a source for problems for people exposed to allergies. The Bernedoodle are wonderful companions, probably among the best and they have a stunning appearance, but this is only a bonus, not the main reason for them being bred. Their attachment to their owners is incredible, preferring to be at their side all the time, no matter the activities in which they are involved.

Where do Bernedoodles Come From?

The Bernedoodle is a cross between the Bernese Mountain Dog and the Poodle. The Bernese Mountain Dog is originally from the Swiss Alps, while the Poodle is thought to have originated in Germany.

History and Original Purpose of the Bernedoodle

The Bernedoodle was initially bred as a working dog. Humans used them for herding, hunting, and guard dogs. Today, they are primarily used as companion animals and family pets.

Bernedoodle Grooming & Coat

Bernedoodles have a thick, double coat that can be either straight or wavy. They shed moderately and require regular brushing to prevent mats and tangles. It would be best if you bathed them only when necessary.

Are Bernedoodles hypoallergenic?

Yes, Bernedoodles are considered to be hypoallergenic because they do not shed much and have little dander. However, they are not entirely allergy-free, so you must test your reaction before bringing one home.

Breeders are generally very helpful when it comes to allergies, being able to advise about the nature and the probability of problems occurring. They may even allow you to return a puppy if it proves to be causing allergy issues. Dealing with a curly Bernedoodle may be a bit time consuming and require a certain level of efforts when it comes to grooming. Although they shed quite little or not at all, they will require clipping every three to four months and frequent brushing in order to prevent the occurrence of mats.

How big are Bernedoodles?

Depending on the information passed on from the parents, the Bernedoodle will come in different sizes. As the poodle can be of three types – standard, toy and miniature, the estimated weight and height for each of them crossed with a Bernese are as follows: about 23 kilos and 54 centimeters for a Bernedoolde with a standard Poodle parent, the toy Poodle crossed with mini Bernedoodle will have about 10 kilos and no more than 35 centimeters height and one with miniature Poodle as parent will have at most 21 kilos and up to 50 centimeters height. In all cases the females are slightly smaller than males.

How long do Bernedoodles live?

The average lifespan of a Bernedoodle is 10 – 12 years. However, some individual dogs have been known to live up to 15 years or more with proper care and nutrition.

Bernedoodles Colors

A Bernedoodle coat’s color is most often black, but there are also a series of combinations of black with white and brown or only white and black.

The mini Bernedoodle

The mini Bernedoodle is a cross between the Miniature Poodle and the Bernese Mountain Dog. They usually weigh between 15 and 30 pounds (7 – 14 kg) and stand at the shoulder at 13 – 20 inches (33 – 51 cm) tall. Miniature Bernedoodles typically have a lifespan of 10 – 12 years. Some breeders also produce “toy” miniBernedoodles by crossing toy poodles with mini Berneses; these dogs usually weigh less than 15 pounds (7 kg).

Bernedoodle price

How much does a bernedoodle cost? The price of a bernedoodle puppy varies depending on several factors such as the breeder’s experience, the coat color and pattern desired, whether the dog will be pet quality or show quality, etc. Still, you can expect to pay anywhere from $1000-$3000 for your bernedoodle puppy. Some breeders may charge more for “designer colors,” such as phantom or particolored coats.

Bernedoodle personality

Bernedoodles are known for being intelligent, affectionate, loyal, playful, and good-natured dogs that make great family pets. They are also relatively easy to train due to their intelligence and willingness to please their owners. However, like all dogs, they will need plenty of exercise, socialization, and training to prevent boredom or destructive behaviors. Because they are bred from two types of working dogs, berniedoodles often inherit some of the best traits from both parents. For example, they may be less prone to barking than other breeds but still make excellent watchdogs. Overall, berniedoodles are lovely, versatile dogs that make great companions for families with children or other pets.

Bernedoodle Health Considerations

Even if on the overall the Bernedoodle has fewer health problems than any of his parents, it is still a breed prone to some conditions, such as the hip or elbow dysplasia and certain skin problems.

Having the dog tested at a very early stage is a good way to identify existing or potential health issues and also can help prevent at least part of them. Any reputable breeder will carry out tests to ensure and prove good results. This is something that needs to be carefully considered by people interested in getting such a dog, that the breeder’s level of care and professionalism can be a good way to know that the money paid for a puppy is a safe investment; it is worth even if such breeders are usually a bit more expensive.
